Here are answers to some of the questions we’re most frequently asked by parents and carers. If you can’t find the information you’re looking for, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help.
Parents and carers must report their child’s absence every day that they are absent from school. Please use the absence reporting function on Class Charts before 8:00am. Find out more here.
Students arriving at school after the gates have closed must enter through the pedestrian gate and use the intercom to notify Main Reception staff of their arrival. Once entry has been authorised, students should proceed directly to Main Reception, where they will be welcomed and required to sign in with the School Attendance Administrator.
Following sign-in, the student will be directed to the appropriate location, either their timetabled lesson or the Emmaus Centre. This decision will be based on the reason provided for their lateness and whether the circumstances are considered unavoidable. The determination of what constitutes an unavoidable reason for lateness will be made by school staff.
As a general rule, students arriving after 9:20am will be required to serve an R1 consequence in the Emmaus Centre, unless the circumstances surrounding their lateness are deemed unavoidable by the school.
Please complete the Absence Request in Exceptional Circumstances Form and return it to the Attendance Office. Each request will be considered individually and the final decision will be made by the Headteacher.
Where possible, we ask that medical and dental appointments are arranged outside of school hours. If your child needs to attend an appointment during the school day, please notify the Attendance Office in advance. Find out more here.
There are five lessons each day, as well as a morning break, lunchtime and Collective Worship. You can find full details, including lesson, break and lunch timings, on our School Timings page.
The amount of home learning will vary depending on your child’s year group and subjects. Home learning can be viewed through Class Charts. If you have any concerns, please contact the relevant subject teacher or your child’s Form Tutor.
We take bullying allegations very seriously. Please contact your child’s Form Tutor or Head of Year if you have concerns about bullying, friendships, behaviour or your child’s wellbeing. If the problem cannot be resolved at this level, it will be passed on to a member of our Senior Leadership Team to deal with.
We encourage students and families to let us know about concerns as soon as possible so that we can provide the appropriate support.
Safeguarding is a priority at St Cuthbert Mayne School. If you are concerned about the safety or wellbeing of a student, please contact our Safeguarding Team.
You can find contact details and further information on our Safeguarding page.
Please contact your child’s PE teacher or Main Reception if there is a reason why they are unable to participate fully in a PE lesson.
Class Charts is used to keep parents and carers up to date with important information about their child’s school life, including attendance, achievements and behaviour. It is also used to report absences and view home learning.

St Cuthbert Mayne School will be a mobile phone and smart technology free environment for students from 1st September 2026 inline with the Government directive.
Smart technology would typically include:
Students must not bring a mobile phone or any smart technology on to the school site.
Students must not have a mobile phone or smart technology on their person at any time during the school day. This includes in bags, blazer pockets, trouser pockets or tucked into skirts.
A pre-agreed exception will be made for any student who needs to bring a phone to school for medical reasons or because they are a vulnerable student. In these circumstances, parents will be asked to complete an Exemption Form and the Mobile Phones/Smart Technology will be secured in a safe. If a student needs to access their Mobile/Phone or Smart Technology during the day, they will do this under the supervision of their Head of Year or Pastoral Support Officer.
Mobile phones and smart technology must not be used for any learning related activity in lessons or around the school site during the day.
Students may bring a mobile phone on school trips for safety reasons.
Sixth Form students may bring their mobile phones and smart technology to school but use is restricted to the Common Room only. Failure to adhere to this will result in them having their mobile phone or Smart Technology confiscated and parents will be asked to collect inline with school policy. Sixth Form students should keep their mobiles switched off and in bags outside of the Common Room.
We encourage parents and carers to contact us if they have a concern. Most issues can be resolved through a conversation with the appropriate member of staff, such as your child’s Form Tutor, Head of Year or subject teacher. Occasionally, a concern cannot be resolved in this way, and it may become a complaint. You can find details of our formal complaints procedure in our Complaints Policy.
If parents or carers have concerns about SEND provision at St Cuthbert Mayne School they should contact Mrs Samantha Toohey - Deputy Headteacher in the first instance. We hope that any concerns can be resolved at an early stage.
If you want to let us know when we are getting things right, please email our Headteacher.
